Krish Vignarajah Announces Community Policing Plan for Maryland
Democratic candidate for governor and former Michelle Obama Policy Director
introduces plan to rebuild trust and usher in a new era of community policing in Maryland
Thursday, April 12, 2018–BALTIMORE, Md.–Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, Democratic candidate for Maryland Governor, announced today a new plan for addressing community and law enforcement relations in Maryland.
Vignarajah’s plan, “Rebuilding Trust through 21st Century Community Policing,” focuses on the following key areas: Establishing trust between communities and police by ensuring police reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, encouraging police to live in the communities they serve, providing pay bonuses to officers who engage in local community development initiatives, implementing more walking patrols focused on engaging with and speaking to residents, and investing additional state funds into police mentorship initiatives for young people; and violence prevention law enforcement efforts, preventative law enforcement efforts which include encouraging all police departments to prioritize deescalation techniques, treating drug addiction as a public health crisis, funding the expansion of Mobile Crisis Teams statewide, and refunding and expanding Operation Safe Kids, the Baltimore-based program, which Governor Hogan de-funded.
The full plan is available at KrishforMaryland.com.
“Three years have passed since Freddie Gray’s death, and it’s unthinkable that the relationships between police and many communities across America, including here in Maryland, remain in crisis,” Vignarajah said. “It’s long past time to act. My administration will help make Maryland a national model for community policing and protecting our residents in a manner that maintains public safety, as well as the freedoms and dignity of the people our police are entrusted to serve.”
