Friday, May 18, 2018–Baltimore, MD—Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, Democratic candidate for Maryland Governor, will announce a plan today for supporting the four of Maryland’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in their ongoing fight for equitable funding and treatment.

“This is personal to me: Both my mother and father taught at Morgan State, and my running mate, Sharon Blake, and her four siblings are proud graduates of MSU,” Krish said. “I want every Marylander to have every opportunity to reach their fullest potential, and that promise must include supporting critical institutions of higher education like Morgan State University, Coppin State, Bowie State University and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which have made invaluable contributions to our economy and our communities throughout the state of Maryland. The State of Maryland has long underfunded, and provided less programmatic support, for these four universities, which should be economic engines of our state.”

The plan will be released at the Maryland HBCUs Matter Coalition rally in downtown Baltimore and will be held on Lexington Street, on the sidewalk outside the Attorney General’s offices. Krish will attend and give remarks, as will Lieutenant Governor Sharon Blake, lifelong teacher and former President of the Baltimore Teachers Union.

As part of the plan, Krish’s administration will invest $500 million in programs, scholarships, and infrastructure, and then build out a model to further comprehensively fund Maryland’s HBCUs in the next decade. The plan focuses the five key points of providing debt-free tuition, building substantial endowments, preparing graduates for well-paying jobs, developing joint-degree programs, and halting programmatic duplication.

An embargoed copy of the plan will be available for early release. The full plan will be available at Noon and will also be available later today on the Krish for Maryland website at

“I am running for Governor because I am worried my daughter and all children in Maryland will not have the same opportunities my parents gave me when they brought our family here when I was a baby girl. The deficit in leadership from our current Governor could not come at a worse time.”
